Skilled Craftsmanship

Bookbinders have been handcrafting books for thousands of years. It takes many years of experience before one is proficient in all the diverse techniques and different styles of binding.

It was said that it took 7 years training to become a competent bookbinder. We can turn our hand to almost anything, and always enjoy a challenge.

A speciality of ours is the restoration of fifteenth to nineteenth century books. We have extensive knowledge of their different styles, construction method & design.

We are accomplished working with vellum and carrying out parchment & paper repairs.

All work is carefully & sympathetically handled, and a thorough examination is made prior to deciding on the most suitable method of repair.

All material used in our conservation work is archival, and we use traditional techniques that have stood the test of time.

Cyril Formby is a Founder Member of The Society of Bookbinders established in 1975, and is their former Vice Chairman.
